Boars Head Abseil and Climb Expedition

From AUD $330.00
  • Duration: 8 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: KATOOMBA, New South Wales

Overlooking the Megalong Valley and Narrow Neck plateau this adventure involves descending a large cliff line (approx. 200 metres) of the upper Blue Mountains in a series of stages or ‘pitches’. This five pitch expedition boasts some exciting abseiling as you straddle and then descend into the massive chasm that forms the second and third pitches. When you reach the last ledge - still a long way above the valley floor - you will traverse on a narrow ledge around the base of the Boars Head Buttress before climbing the classic climb "Old Shandy". In two pitches and with extreme exposure to heights make sure you ready yourself. After this we follow a skyline traverse on narrow ledges and interesting rock features back to the cars. An awesome experience.

Lunch

All BMAC full day participants receive a generous picnic lunch, provided by our local deli.

Select one of their delicious, gourmet sandwich options when you book your trip.  Altitude Deli can cater to most dietary requirements with notice, so please let us know of your needs as soon as possible.

Equipment provided

We will provide you with a backpack, helmet, harness, carabiners, safety leashes, abseil descender, climbing shoes and all other necessary climbing equipment.  We also cover your National Parks and Wildlife Service park entry fee.  While we encourage all participants to bring their own weather-appropriate clothing (see below), we have spare warm clothing and rain jackets if needed.

Things to bring

Comfortable clothes suited to the conditions.  Katoomba is 1000m above sea level and you can expect cooler temperatures than in Sydney.  As a general rule we recommend:

  • Long sleeves and pants for sun and scratch protection
  • Wool, synthetic and fleece fabrics (no cotton or denim)
  • Closed shoes
  • Sun hat, sunscreen and beanie
  • Rain jacket
  • Hair tie for those with long hair
  • Water bottle – at least 1.5 litres.
  • Personal medication (Ventolin/EpiPen etc.)
  • Camera or Smartphone

Participant Requirements

We believe our abseiling and rockclimbing adventures are heaps of fun, but what goes down must come up! We want to ensure you have the best experience possible.  It’s important to us that you have the fitness and skills to enjoy your day so please read on:

Fitness:  Participants are required to have a moderate level of fitness.  While abseiling down the cliff is not particularly physically demanding, once participants reach the bottom they need to climb back to the top. Rock climbing involves strength, balance, flexibility and stamina – but you don’t have to be an elite athlete to be a successful climber.

Abseiling:  Abseiling experience desirable but not necessary.

Climbing:  Indoor or outdoor climbing experience is recommended but not essential.

Also: BMAC requires each participant to follow all instructions from our guides, to maintain a safe work environment and ensure the wellbeing and safety of the whole group.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns, we’d be delighted to talk with you.
